Algorithms to Live By: The Computer Science of Human Decisions by Brian Christian & Tom Griffiths

Recommended by our colleague, Omkar Yarguddi, this is the coming together of acclaimed author Brian Christian and cognitive scientist Tom Griffiths.  This book talks about how insights from algorithms in computer science can be applied to daily life to deal with very human questions. It is full of practical takeaways to help solve everyday problems.

Top takeaway: The same algorithm can be used to solve multiple seemingly different problems. For example, the optimal stopping algorithm can help you pick a life partner, as well as decide on which parking spot to pick.

Based on a popular course at the University of Washington, this book gives you a toolkit that you can use to see through the bullshit around you, peddled by your friends, colleagues, politicians, advertisers, and researchers!

One takeaway:  For any piece of information, ask who is behind the information, how did they get it, and what are they trying to sell.
